The foundation of any effective therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist, and research confirms that this relationship is the single most important factor in the success of therapy. Family therapy begins with a session with all members of a family to establish shared goals and desired outcomes.

Therapy may proceed with conjoint sessions with all family members and may also include individual sessions with individuals in service of the larger goals of the therapy. An overarching goal of family therapy is to equip the family to reorganize in a positive way and to not create dependency on the therapist for lasting change.
